AN INTERESTING
BAG
Just large enough to hold
an x-ray
21x16”, made of vintage
barkcloth
and wool with brass findings
December 2000 |
 |
| During the three-week interval between
the day of my diagnosis and first consultation with
Dr. Michael Schuster at Cornell-New York Presbyterian,
I fashioned a bag the perfect size to carry chest
x-rays and medical records for the train ride from
Philadelphia to New York City. “An Interesting Bag”,
is made of beautifully patterned vintage fabric,
another one of my passions. I was enrolled in a clinical
study, which required weekly visits to the study
center at New York-Presbyterian. My bag held all
the “stuff” I wanted to take with me, including the
book I was reading at the time, water and snacks,
my date book, and whatever quilt project I was working
on. |

A SECULAR LOG CABIN QUILT
18x24”, machine pieced with “Cherrywood Fabrics” thread.
Fall 2002
-longing for things to be
back to normal-
My hospitalization lasted seven and a half weeks--most of the summer of 2002— two weeks longer than I had expected. When, at last, I came home in August, I walked around my immaculately clean house, just touching “home”. In a little while I returned to the beloved place at my sewing machine. What should I make, now that the hardest part of the journey was behind me? Curiously, I did not want to create another narrative, another image about leukemia or BMT. I wanted to work simply, with color, pattern and precision. I returned to the roots of quilting with a variation on the “log cabin” design. This required that I pay attention to detail, but there was no guesswork in the design.

JOANNA’S
QUILT
Bed sized,
flannel and cotton, machine pieced and quilted
December 2000-June 2002
When
I was diagnosed with CML, one of my first instincts
was to return to the familiarity and safety in my
love for sewing to make quilts for my children. I
wanted to give them something that I had made with
my own hands that would be of comfort and reassurance
during the difficult times to come. My children and
I went out on a cold, dark December evening, just
3 days after my diagnosis, to my favorite quilt shop
to choose fabrics for a quilt for my daughter Joanna’s 14th birthday present.
Joanna wanted a design known as “trip around the
world”. She chose
a soft, yellow flannel print for the backing and center, and built the
other fabrics, mostly shades of blue and gold, around it. Many of the fabrics
had a celestial theme to them—stars, planets and sky. For a while
we forgot all about leukemia. Eventually, I also made a quilt for my
son, Jordan. The quilt is made of blue, green and beige fabrics, and
features scenes of northern lakes and woods to remind Jordan of Minnesota,
which he had grown to love after many years of returning home to visit
my large and loving family. |

COLLAGE BOX IN ORANGE AND BLUE
17 x 10”, a small printer’s drawer
with papers, threads, beads and prints thread.
Fall 2002
-wanting things to fit perfectly
in little compartments-
Many of my narrative art quilts were hand-quilted and embellished in detail. Everywhere I went, I took a see-through cosmetic type bag with my current project, several spools of thread, embroidery scissors and a thimble. But about halfway through my hospitalization, I could not pick up a needle. I think I had just seen too many “sharps” going into me.
So when I got home I returned to paper and glue to create windows in a small wooden printer’s drawer. The idea was to work with the complimentary colors of orange and blue in various textures and patterns. This work was as exacting as my quilting, and I found a sense of accomplishment when I used paper, prints, beads, and thread to make a miniature piece of art in a compartment, but then still have numerous empty compartments left to decorate another day. |

VINTAGE
BAGS FOR SALE
11x13”, made
of vintage barkcloth
and lined with cotton
Summer/Fall 2003
-life is gradually getting back to normal-
Now that I am confident in my future,
I have returned to some of the more ordinary things
I used to make before I got cancer. When I was grappling
with the diagnosis and cure of leukemia, I felt compelled
to create the things that really meant something, and
I certainly didn’t feel I had time to make things
like “interesting bags”. I have also developed
cataracts during the post-BMT period and am not able
to do the intricate stitching I did on the narrative
quilts. So for fun I have gotten out my collection
of vintage fabrics and started making bags for my sisters
and friends. My sister Stephanie and I are embarking
on a business with our love of vintage jewelry, linens
and fabrics, and will offer vintage bags for sale.
These are definitely one of a kind, and are absolutely
devoid of meaning. |

FLANNEL QUILT
"NESTING FOR WINTER"
Queen-sized
machine pieced and quilted
Winter 2003
I made this large flannel quilt during the winter of 2003, while I was recuperating from transplant. This was not a particularly creative time of my life, but I was longing for warmth and safety, so this project was perfect for the long winter days. The pattern was designed by Evelyn Sloppy in “Log Cabin Fever”. I selected the fabrics and backing, and the quilting was professionally done. |
